Lily and her childhood sweetheart, Atlas, always believed that Boston was where everything was better so she moves there after graduating from college. There, she starts a business and meets someone she can't stop thinking about. Things seem too good to be true. Ryle Kincaid doesn't do relationships but when he meets Lily, he can't get her out of his mind. They start off pretty casual and the relationship quickly blooms into something serious. However, Lily bumps into Atlas after not seeing him for years and all of a sudden, her relationship with Ryle is threatened.
Everyone I know that has read this said that this is one of Colleen Hoover's best so I'm glad that I chose this to be my first read out of all her books. This story was tragic. I can't even tell you why without spoiling it for you. Just know, the turn of events was not expected.
I like the way the story about Atlas is told in the form of diary entries rather than flash backs or recalling of memories. You could also tell the difference in speech between 16 year old Lily and her adult self. She was an unexpectedly strong character, she's not who I thought she would be. She had conviction in her decisions and knew how to stand her ground. The sacrifices she made for the ones she loves was admirable and so is her kindheartedness. Ryle, on the other hand, also turned out to be someone completely different. He is the embodiment of a plot twist.
If you've already read this book, you'd know why it is saddening to know that Colleen was inspired to write this based on true events. I hope nobody ever has to experience the things written about in this book.
I finished reading this almost a week ago and have only gotten around to writing this review now so please forgive me for the lack of details, the story is just not fresh in my mind anymore. I also didn't take much notes, unfortunately. It's also really difficult to write a review about the main theme of the story without spoiling the story so please read the book instead and maybe we can have a conversation about it!
I did enjoy this book though and would recommend it. It's not your typical romance novel and it's got a bittersweet ending. Also, I've decided recently not to keep all the books I've read, just to keep the ones I really liked and I'll be keeping this one so I guess you could say I really liked this one. Also, how pretty is that cover? Haha!
